Dates: Fall Semester: Approx. September 7- December 13, 2009
Spring Semester: January 11- April 18, 2010
Description
Founded as a viking settlement, Dublin has been Ireland's primary city for most of the island's history since medieval times. Today, it is an economic, administrative and cultural centre for the Republic of Ireland, and has one of the fastest growing populations of any European capital city. The Emerald Isle itself is replete with natural and human wonders, from the Burren, the rocky grassland of country Clare to the Norman and Anglo-Irish architecture.
The Institute of Public Administration in Dublin is the Irish national centre for development of best practice in public administration and public management. Students will have the opportunity to participate in an internship with the Irish Parliament for approximately 25 hours per week, and in addition, take three courses in Irish history literature, and society and politics. Grading is based on papers and participation in study modules to earn credit for each course. This program is offered as a component to those in the Irish Studies Masters program, and open to undergraduates with an academic background and interest in politics and government.
Accommodation
Students will reside in homestays in the Dublin metropolitan area, so that they will be immersed into the Irish culture.
Credits
All students take the following four (4) courses:
POL 600 Irish Parliamentary Internship (6 credits)
POL 511 Irish Society & Politics (3 credits)
HIST 529 Ireland in the 19th and 20th Century (3 credits)
ENG 580 Irish Literary Tradition (3 credits)
Because of the greater depth of outside work and preparation required in post-graduate studies, advanced students often opt to take only two courses and the internship for a total of 12 credits. Students using this option are encouraged to audit the other course.
Cost
CUA tuition plus a $5,000 program fee, which includes internship placement, accommodation, some meals with homestay, ISIC card, On-Call International emergency evacuation insurance, and pre-departure and on-site orientation.
